containerRef was declared and attached to MessageBrowser's root element, but containerRef.current is never read anywhere in the file — it has been dead since it was added. The drag-to-resize handler it looks like it belongs to works off dragStartX and dragStartWidth and never needed it. The offline banner guard anchored the root element on this ref, so it now anchors on the component's own background instead, which is the one class the root carries and the inner rows do not.
