Rendering the page against an unreachable backend put "Internal Server Error" on screen as the explanation. That is a status phrase written for an operator reading a log; in front of somebody who has just clicked a link in their email it says only that something is broken and leaves them to guess whether it was their fault and whether their account is now in a strange state. A 5xx now gets a sentence of ours, which says the thing that actually matters: nothing about the account changed. Refusals that carry a `reason` are already written for a reader and still win; a 4xx without one still carries a sentence the server composed on purpose. Found by rendering the page, which is the only way it could have been.
