email_metadata.search_index has carried is_read and is_starred since it was created but never the third IMAP flag, \Answered. That was harmless while the index only fed full-text search, which does not care about it. It stops being harmless now that the index can serve a page of a folder directly: the message list draws its reply marker from this flag, so a row served from an index without it would state, silently and wrongly, that the member had never replied to that message. The column is added by KamoInitializer's **************** and does not exist until that has run — which is why the read path that needs it is behind a flag that defaults to off.
