`await promise.catch((e: Error) => e)` does not give you an Error. The catch handler's return type unions with the promise's resolve type, so the result is `ChessGameView | Error` and `.message` does not exist on it — seven errors, and a red build, in the file added to prove the error handling works. Replaced with an explicit helper that returns the rejection or fails loudly if the call resolved, which also makes "this must reject" an assertion rather than an assumption. It was pushed because I read an EMPTY backgrounded tsc output file as a pass. tsc takes minutes here; an absent verdict means still running, never clean.
