@Transactional is applied by a proxy and sweep() called expireDue() on this, so the annotation was inert. The expiry notices read the envelope's organization domains, which are LAZY — an untransacted sweep throws LazyInitializationException instead of telling anybody their document ran out of time. Split the work onto its own bean so the call crosses a bean boundary and the annotation applies.
