The selected plate lifts 2px and carries a 1px ring, and it is the first child of an `overflow-y: auto` column — so its top border sat 3px above the clip edge and was shaved off. Measured at exactly -2px of headroom at 560x690, 380x520, 460x620 and 700x900, including sizes where the scroller had nothing to scroll, which is why resizing the window never helped: the overlap was never about height. It read as the Chess heading cutting into both buttons. Padding inside the scroller with an equal negative margin: spacing unchanged, nothing against the clip edge. Headroom is +5 at every size now, and the pane still scrolls correctly when the window is genuinely too short.
