The rim's lead current stays white-hot all the way round

Its gradient was pinned to the hexagon's box rather than travelling with the arc, so for a third of every lap the current was gold on the gold rim and simply vanished. It is now solid white in a glow of its own, the counter-current a deeper sky blue that reads against both, and the gold halo spreads wider so the rim still burns on a light background.
