Choosing a row in the expanded rail ran close(), which also emptied every expanded branch, so each click folded Settings back to its own row and the next sub-topic meant climbing Settings -> Enabled Apps -> Docs again. - The expanded rail no longer closes on a choice; the branches above the row stay open and the chosen row is lit (aria-current) while its page shows. - A branch that opens scrolls the rail down to its last row, without pushing the row that opened it off the top. - Open/expanded/chosen live in a per-tab store (sessionStorage), so the tree survives remounts, the rail switching shape, and document loads into another app. The collapsed rail's fly-out still closes on a choice but reopens on the branch it was left on.
