A site is a place, such as an office, a shop or a building. Inside a site you describe its spaces: buildings, floors, rooms, areas and vehicle bays. Spaces make devices easy to find, and they let you give access by place instead of one device at a time.
Before you start
- You need the Manage IoT Spaces right.
- Placing devices in a way that would let more people use them also needs the Manage IoT Access right.
Add a site and its rooms
- Go to Settings → Devices (IoT) → Sites and spaces.
- Choose Add site. Enter the Site name and choose a Time zone; schedules, sunrise and sunset use this zone. The address, coordinates and notes are optional. Choose Save site.
- Select the site and choose Add a room. Enter a Name, choose a Kind (Building, Floor, Room, Area or Vehicle bay) and choose Save.
- To put a room inside another, select the outer room and choose Add a room again. Rooms can be nested at most eight levels deep.
- To move a room, select it and choose Move…. Pick the New parent in the same site and choose Move. The rooms and devices inside it move with it.
You can also Rename a room, Edit site, or Delete either one. Deleting a room moves its rooms and devices up one level. A site can be deleted only when it has no rooms or devices left.
Put devices in rooms
Devices you connect arrive without a place; the Devices page shows them as Not placed. You can place them in two ways.
- By hand: open the device, and in Place and customer choose a Site or room, then Save place. To place several at once, select them on the Devices page and choose Move….
- From the vendor's own rooms: on the Sites and spaces tab, under Vendor rooms, choose the Connection. For each Vendor's room, choose where it goes in Placed in. Its devices move there, and devices the vendor adds to that room later follow on the next sync.
Devices you placed by hand are never moved by a mapping.
Result
Your sites and rooms appear as a tree on the Spaces page, with the number of devices in each. On the Sites and spaces tab, select a site or room and choose See devices to open it there.
Why it matters
- On the Devices page you can filter by place.
- When you give access, you can choose A room or A site as the place. Devices placed there later are included.
- Site modes belong to a site. See Site Modes Explained.
If it doesn't work
- "Rooms can be nested at most eight levels deep.": choose a parent higher up the tree.
- "This site still has rooms or devices. Move or remove them first.": move or delete what is inside the site, then delete it.
- "Placing these devices here would widen who can use them. Ask someone who manages access.": the move would let more people use the devices. Someone with the Manage IoT Access right has to place them.
- "This vendor reported no rooms." or a vendor room is missing: run Sync devices on the connection first. If the connection needs a new sign-in, see How to Relink a Connection.
