Setting the helper up meant downloading two files, opening a terminal and running a script with sudo. That is a flow people abandon, and an abandoned install is indistinguishable from a feature that does not work — especially when you meet it mid-meeting with somebody waiting on you. The binary now installs itself. Running it with no arguments puts it somewhere stable, registers it to start with the desktop, takes whatever privileged step the platform needs, starts it, and says so in a native dialog. On Windows that is the whole procedure: double-click the download. No admin rights, no terminal, no script. The three install scripts are gone; there is one file. Linux's one privileged step goes through pkexec, so it is a password window rather than a terminal, falling back to sudo -n and then to printing the command. And because a new group only applies to sessions started afterwards, Probe now tells those two states apart — in the group database but not in the process's groups means "log out and back in", not the generic "cannot open /dev/uinput". That message is what a freshly installed machine actually shows, and it now reads as the last step rather than as a failure. The consent dialog keeps looking while it is on screen, so installing the helper right then turns it into the ordinary "may they control your screen?" question — nobody has to work out that they should rejoin. The install page runs the same loopback check and reports whether the helper is running, which closes the loop for someone who installed it and came back to see if it worked. It also gained copy buttons for the one command each platform needs. --uninstall reverses all of it and names what it cannot take back without root, rather than implying the machine is exactly as it was. **************** builds the darwin binaries, which cannot cross-compile from Linux because CoreGraphics needs cgo. Verified on this machine: install, uninstall and reinstall round trip, udev rule and group applied, systemd user unit enabled, ready:true under the new group. 35 agent tests including the username interpolated into the root shell; tsc web and native; eslint; all 7 webpack bundles.
