The empty-list explanation added with the search results bar keyed off the query alone, so it also fired when the search had matched plenty and the Unread or Starred filter was what emptied the list. The member then read "Nothing matches <query>" directly above a bar reporting how many things did. It is now gated on the search itself having come back empty, which is the exact complement of the bar's own condition -- the two can no longer both be on screen.
