Unread chats are auto-opened once per tab-session, guarded by a sessionStorage flag. That flag was written up-front, before the fetch that tells a chat session from a support one — so if the request failed, the member's conversations silently stopped appearing for the rest of the session, with nothing to indicate why. The unread badge does still cover them, but the feature exists precisely because a badge is easy to miss. The flag is now written once a decision has actually been reached: nothing unread, or a set of windows dispatched. Both still get exactly-once semantics. A failed fetch reaches no decision and simply retries on the next load.
