A straight "best six by score" is the wrong cap for this, and the reason is the shape of real sites: a company's wide lockup appears in the header, in JSON-LD and in Open Graph and scores highly every time, while its square mark exists once, as a favicon, and scores modestly. Six by score is therefore routinely six lockups -- and the wizard's compact slot, which wants the mark, is left choosing between wordmarks that will be squeezed into a navigation bar. Each shape now gets two reserved places before the remainder fills by score. Costs nothing when a site has only one shape (the reservation goes unused and the list is still full) and is the difference between a usable compact rail and a pointless one when it has both. This matters more now than it did: the compact slot accepts any image and converts it, so a raster mark is a real answer rather than one the wizard would have discarded anyway.
