flatten() applied blank pages, rotations, modifiers, field values, page order and certificates. It never drew the annotations. A rectangle, a highlight or an arrow drawn over a template showed up in the designer and in the signer's browser and then was simply not in the PDF that got delivered. For a highlight that is a missing flourish. For the rectangle a member draws over a bank account number it is the opposite of what they asked for, so all five types are drawn now, after the field values and before the watermarks that sit above — the order the designer stacks its layers in. A rectangle marked "remove the text underneath" also has its text taken out, by PdfRedactor, before anything at all is drawn: redaction rewrites the page's own content stream, so a mark stamped first would be rewritten away with the text it was meant to survive. Neither pass throws — a redaction that fails must not lose a signature — and a failure is logged for what it is, which is that the covered words are still in the delivered file.
