The badge counted "live tickets nobody has picked up, plus the ones I hold" — message-blind, and it only ever fell when a ticket reached a terminal status. So it sat at five over a list that marked nothing, and opening a conversation moved neither. It now counts what it says: conversations with something in them for this member to read. Both halves of the old predicate are gone. Unread is one native query shared with the ticket list, so the number and the marked rows are the same fact rather than two approximations that drifted twice. Retiring a handover now broadcasts the badge. It is one of the two ways a conversation stops being unread, and without the broadcast the number stayed put for the case with no new messages in it — which is precisely the case the handover stamp exists for. The badge's own tests move with it: they no longer stub two HQL halves but assert what the number means — a conversation the other side wrote in counts, one just handed over counts even with nothing new in it, and each ticket counts once however many ways it qualifies.
