Every document list ran an esign_templates lookup for EACH row — 100 per page — to answer "is this an original that happens to carry a design". That was how the Modified tab was built before versions existed. The tab is now its own query over modified_kind, nothing else ever read the field, and a search across all four repos found no other consumer. Also: a version that has been trashed and is then opened for editing again is restored rather than handed back trashed. The unique index means a second one of that kind can never be derived, so without this, trashing a version was a one-way door that looked like a bug — the member edits the row it hands back, saves, and it never reappears in the Modified tab, which lists only live rows. Opening something for editing is an unambiguous statement that it is wanted.
