This is the comparison that matters most, and we want to be careful with it, because plenty of agencies are genuinely good and the bad ones are not bad through laziness. The structural problem is that a full-service agency sells software it did not build, infrastructure it does not run and measurement it cannot inspect. When everything works, none of that is visible. When something breaks, all of it is.
| Dimension | a marketing agency | Kamo |
|---|---|---|
| Software in the stack | Resold or rented — licensed from a platform and marked up per seat | Built by us. You can buy it directly and see the published price |
| When a number looks wrong | The investigation ends at a vendor dashboard nobody controls | We read the code that produced the number, because we wrote it |
| Email that does not arrive | The campaign tool reports it as sent; that is where it stops | We run the mail servers and diagnose authentication and reputation directly |
| Ad spend | Commonly a percentage of spend, so their income rises with your costs | Flat management fee, your accounts, your billing, no markup |
| Account and data ownership | Frequently held by the agency; history leaves when you do | Yours throughout — we are granted access, and access can be revoked |
| Anything genuinely custom | Subcontracted to a development shop, with margin and a telephone game | Built in-house by the team that runs a forty-service platform |
| Breadth of marketing services | Usually wider — brand campaigns, PR, events, media relationships | Narrower. We do not do broadcast, PR or events |
| Availability | Staffed to take your project this quarter | A small team that takes a limited number of engagements at a time |
When a marketing agency is the better choice
- You need broad creative and brand campaign work, PR, events or media relationships — we do none of these and would be pretending
- You need a large volume of routine content or design production quickly; agencies are structured for throughput and we are not
- You need to start this month with a team already staffed for it
- Your requirement is genuinely standard marketing execution and nothing in your stack needs building, in which case our main advantage is irrelevant to you
The honest verdict
If your problem is campaign execution and creative volume, a good agency is the right buy and we will say so. If your problem is that nobody can tell you why a number is wrong, why the email is not arriving, or why the thing you need built keeps being quoted as impossible, that is a supplier who does not own anything underneath the surface — and that is the specific problem we exist to solve.
