Connect smart locks and thermostats through Seam, which reaches many lock and thermostat brands with one sign-in.
Before you start
- You need the Manage IoT Connections right and an account with the lock or thermostat brand.
- Seam is set up by the platform first. Your organization sees it in the list only once the platform offers it. If it is not there, ask your platform administrator.
- Lock and unlock are Security functions. Before a security action, people are asked for their password; how often is set by Password confirmation for security actions under Settings → Devices (IoT) → Safety And Notifications. See Device Functions and Safety Classes Explained.
Connect it
- Go to Settings → Devices (IoT) → Connections and choose Add connection.
- In Add a connection, choose Seam (under Access control).
- In Name this connection, enter the name people will see.
- Choose Continue to Seam. Seam opens in the same tab.
- Choose your lock or thermostat brand and sign in to that account.
- You come back to the Connections tab. It says Connected. Looking for devices…, then how many devices it found.
Result
Your locks and thermostats appear after the first sync, with lock state, door sensors, battery and thermostat set points. Changes arrive live as Seam reports them. Lock and unlock only work for people who were given those functions; see How to Give a Team Access to Device Functions.
The platform's Seam plan can limit how many actions each device may take a day. Once a device reaches the limit, commands to it fail until the next day.
When you remove the connection, the brand account it linked is also removed from Seam where possible.
If it doesn't work
- The vendor did not complete the sign-in. The brand sign-in in Seam did not finish or was not approved. The form opens again with your name filled in; choose Continue to Seam again.
- The vendor plan's allowance is used up for now. The device has used its actions for today.
- The device is offline, so it did not act. The lock cannot be reached right now.
- See Fixing a Connection Problem.
