Build out your organization's department structure, and optionally grant departments their own roles or rights on top of what their members' roles already give them.
Before you start
The Configure System right.
Steps
- Go to Settings → Essential Setup → Departments.
- Click Add Department.
- Enter a Department Name (2–100 characters).
- Optionally pick a Parent department to nest this one under — departments can nest to any depth, forming a real org chart, not a flat list. You can't nest a department under itself or any of its own children; the picker greys those out.
- Optionally set a Session Timeout, a contact mailbox, phone, and extension.
- Under Associated Roles, check which security roles apply to this department.
- Under Direct Rights, optionally grant or deny specific rights directly on the department, on top of whatever its associated roles provide. (Rights forced by your organization's applied security model are hidden here, since they can't be overridden at this level.)
- Save.
To delete a department
Click Delete and confirm. If the department has sub-departments, they aren't deleted — they move up to take its place under its own parent. The confirmation message tells you exactly how many will move.
What you'll see
A department's associated roles and direct rights feed into the same permission waterfall as everything else — see Security Roles Explained
