Every email template belongs to one of three tiers, and what you're allowed to do with it depends entirely on which:
- SYSTEM — the platform-wide default for a given template key. Only visible/editable by top-level organizations. Editing a SYSTEM template affects future organizations created and any "reset to default" action — it does not retroactively change existing organizations' own copies.
- REQUIRED — your organization's own copy of a system-mandated template. You can edit it, but changes only affect your copy; there's a Reset to Default action to pull the platform version back in. REQUIRED templates can't be archived.
- CUSTOM — fully your own, created from scratch. Freely archivable and duplicable, with none of the above restrictions.
SYSTEM templates can't be duplicated or archived at all — those actions are disabled with a tooltip explaining why.
